  Melissa Mejia

  Seeing her parents make a difference as physicians inspired Dr. Melissa Mejia to become one, too. “Providing good medical care has always been our passion,” says Dr. Mejia, who is board-certified in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine. To do that, she strives to evaluate patients in a thorough and caring manner and keep up with medical research. “My favorite part is helping patients achieve better health and quality of life. I especially love the challenges and rewards of working with seniors.” Away from work, Dr. Mejia likes to spend time with family and friends and exercise. Originally from the Dominican Republic, she also enjoys traveling and hopes to explore Australia one day.

  Noureen Akbar

  Dr. Noureen Akbar has always loved caring for others and learning about the human body, so practicing medicine over the years has been rewarding for her. “I’m blessed to be able to form meaningful relationships with my senior patients,” says Dr. Akbar, who is board-certified in geriatric and family medicine. “I genuinely care about them and strive to improve their health and quality of life.” When she’s not with patients, Dr. Akbar serves as a member and board member of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians. She also likes to keep up with medical research, spend quality time with her husband and kids, try new foods, read, draw, and travel. One day, she hopes to see the mountainous northern areas of her native country, Pakistan.

  Yordan Jimenez Perez

  Dr. Yordan Jimenez Perez knew in high school that he wanted to work in healthcare. “I wanted to become a doctor to help others in need, especially elderly patients,” he says. He adds, “I felt it important to be involved with care for this population.” He explains that “being able to help those in need and see how my little contribution can bring so much happiness to their lives” is his favorite part of his profession. “Being a patient can be scary. I like to take time to get to know my patients and ask about their friends and family, hobbies, and important aspects of their lives,” he says. In his free time, Dr. Perez loves spending quality time with family and friends. He also enjoys traveling and exploring new cultures.

  Gladys de Leon

  As a podiatrist, Dr. Gladys de Leon loves the opportunity to work closely with primary care physicians and other specialists. “Patients deserve our time and good communication as health care providers,” she says. Compassion and mutual respect are vital in her practice. “I am a firm believer in education, early intervention, and making sure each patient is well informed, taking accountability for their health,” she explains. She feels honored to serve as an advocate for her senior patients. In her free time, Dr. de Leon loves spending time with friends and family, especially her children. She also enjoys reading and staying active with daily exercise and Pilates. Dr. de Leon was born in the Philippines, but grew up on Long Island in New York.

  Teresa Irizarry-Quiles

  At an early age, Dr. Teresa Irizarry-Quiles formed an interest in medicine. “I always told myself how fascinating it should be to help improve people’s health, and now as a doctor, I see it. I never regret being what I am, and I thank God for giving me the opportunity,” she explains. She is passionate about her role as a physician. “I love educating my patients and earning their trust, thus becoming a team,” she says. She always listens to patients and strives to treat everyone “with respect and love.” She especially enjoys working with the senior population. “I respect and admire them a lot,” she says. In her free time, Dr. Irizarry-Quiles enjoys watching movies and spending quality time with her family and friends.

  Shalimar Delgado Pérez

  Dr. Shalimar Delgado Pérez knew at a young age that she wanted to be a doctor. “I knew that was the career I wanted to pursue because it would allow me to help others in need,” she says. She loves “empowering patients to achieve their wellness through prevention, education, and health maintenance interviews.” She promises to always listen to her patients’ needs and care for them with love. “I have heard many times the senior population being called the forgotten generation, and I want to help them feel like they are not forgotten. I want to help them achieve their health goals in whichever stage they find themselves in their life,” she explains. In her free time, Dr. Delgado Pérez enjoys trying new food with her husband.

  Sausan Hammad chose a career in healthcare to “make a meaningful diff erence in people’s lives.” She explains, “Being able to make a positive impact on their health and well-being brings immense satisfaction and purpose to my work.” She believes in personalized, holistic care and says that “empathic communication” is key in her practice. “My commitment is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care, leveraging both my professional expertise and personal experiences to ensure the well-being of my patients,” she says. She adds that for her, “continuous learning is a priority.” In her free time, Sausan Hammad loves traveling to her hometown of Miami to visit loved ones and enjoy the “diverse culinary scene.”

  Dr. Yessenia Marte has always been driven to make a difference in people’s lives. “Family medicine is my passion. Caring for the patient as a whole, being able to be compassionate, and learning about my patient is the greatest satisfaction,” she says. Dr. Marte is grateful for the opportunity to see patients frequently to better manage their chronic ailments, and she feels honored to serve the senior population. “I appreciate their wisdom,” she explains. Dr. Marte says she deeply cares for all her patients and will always go “the extra mile to meet their needs.” When not with patients, Dr. Marte loves spending time in nature. She especially enjoys hiking and cycling. Dr. Marte also loves spending time with family and friends.
